What is Waterproofing?

Waterproofing is a layer of waterproofing membrane which we apply over our bathrooms, toilets, interior, and exterior walls to protect it from water leakage. The layer of waterproofing membrane helps us to stop moisture build-up in the walls and ceilings. Thus keeps the structure sturdy.

What is a primer?

Primer is a liquid solution made up of epoxy, polyurethane, or latex. It helps us to prepare the surface for tiling, waterproofing, etc. The usage of primer also improves the adhesive property. When we apply primer over a surface, it reduces its pin holding and traps contaminants. This is critical for the longevity of tiles

Why is the primer required in waterproofing?

When you apply primer on a surface, it helps it in many ways. First of all, it seals the contaminants and dust on the surface. Reduces the porosity and pin holding on the surface of the wall. Primer acts as a buffer that stops the excessive residual moisture in the substrate that affects the waterproofing membrane. If you don’t apply primer before waterproofing, it will cause blistering, which is detrimental to waterproofing.

Is the primer required over a waterproofing membrane?

Applying a primer is necessary before you apply the waterproofing membrane. But it is not required if you have already applied the waterproofing membrane. Waterproofing membranes are non-absorbent. It will not absorb the primer if you apply over it. It is unnecessary. Also if you haven’t applied primer before you apply the waterproofing membrane, it will void your warranty.

Why can’t primers withstand high temperatures?

Primers cannot withstand high temperatures. It gets affected by high temperatures. At higher temperature primers are not helpful because it gets evaporated before it can trap contaminants and control porosity.

Why do we see waterproofing failure?

Sometimes you can see that the waterproofing that you have done is not sufficient. The reason behind it is the incorrect placement of waterproofing components. If you misapply a bond breaker or primer, another reason could be if you have used incompatible sealant or an incompatible tile adhesive on that surface. So first research to make a perfectly sound waterproofing system.

What are bituminous waterproofing membranes?

Bituminous waterproofing membranes are a type of waterproofing membrane that is made by mixing bitumen with polymer-based plastics. Sometimes it is also reinforced.

Why is reinforcement preferred in bituminous waterproofing membranes?

Reinforcement is done in bituminous waterproofing membranes to increase its mechanical strength. The increased strength helps the structure in coping with the building movement. For reinforcement, we can use Polyester wool and fibreglass in the bituminous waterproofing membrane.

Do bituminous membranes melt due to warm weather?

The bituminous membranes can withstand high temperatures. The reason behind it the leading ingredient bitumen. Bitumen melts at very high temperatures. So climatic temperatures cannot affect it. So they are entirely safe to use. It can get soft at higher temperatures, but its structural integrity remains unaffected.

How do I know it is efflorescence and not discolouration?

If there is discolouration, you can quickly notice that the colours in the tiles have faded way. But you can only see efflorescence when the surface is dry. Efflorescence becomes invisible when the surface is wet. Then you can see the colour of the tiles the same as new. But when the surface gets dry again, the efflorescence reappears. It is more visible to your eyes if you have used darker coloured paints and tiles.

How to control efflorescence in my tiling system?

If you don’t want efflorescence to appear in your tile, you should use an adhesive that dries fast. Also, use special low efflorescence grout. It will help you to minimize its effect. You have to do it while you are installing the tiles. After installation uses less amount of water for cleaning purposes, this means less amount of water goes inside the tile surface. This prevents the efflorescence from coming up.

What are the various types of pool tiles?

There are different types of tiles available in the market. They are Porcelain tiles, mosaic tiles, ceramic tiles, brick tiles, and stone tiles. If you are going to choose pool tiles, a few factors play an essential role like your choice of colour, the budget, and the size of the tiles. The texture of the tiles is also to be taken into consideration. A smooth and glazy tile can look great, but a textured tile will provide you with a better grip on the surface. So it depends on your preference which type of tile you want to choose.

Which Type of Tiles are best for Swimming Pools?

For many years porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles are used as pool tiles. They are easy to install and scrub. Their surface is smooth, so chances of bruises from the tiles are minimal. The ceramic tiles can be hand-printed. They look good in swimming pools whereas the porcelain tiles absorb very little heat than the other tiles. Both of the tiles are a good option for paving the deck and on the waterline of the pool.

What should we keep in mind when we are choosing pool tiles?

When you are choosing pool tiles first thing, you should keep in mind that you use tiles that are no larger than 100 mm. Your preference should be between 20mm to 58mm. This size is most commonly used in pool construction. The colour preference is your personal choice. The most used swimming pool colour is blue. They are available in dark and light colour shades. White tiles also give your pool a light bluish shade. You can also use black and charcoal coloured tiles if you want.

Travertine vs. limestone for a pool deck?

Travertine and limestone tiles are both made from rocks. Travertine is a sedimentary rock created by deposited calcium carbonate. They are generally cream in colour. Limestone is also a sedimentary rock. It is found mostly in a hot climate. It is denser than travertine rock. The colour of the limestone is more vibrant, and this rock has more grip. Limestone produces less glare when exposed to the sun and absorbs less water. So as a pool deck tile you can prefer limestone tiles.

How many types of tiles can we find in the market?

We can find many types of tiles in the market. Ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles are the common ones. Other types of tiles you can find are of stone like marble, travertine, bluestone, limestone tiles. Glass tiles, cement tiles, mosaic tiles, metal tiles, and even resin tiles have gained popularity with time.

What is glazed ceramic tile?

Ceramic tiles, when covered with a layer of liquid glass, form glazed ceramic tiles. It helps the ceramic tiles to be more water-resistant and stain-resistant.

What are mosaic tiles?

When small tiles are set to make a design pattern, they are called mosaic tiles. You can use similar types of tiles, or you can use different types of tiles to make the pattern. Like you can use by combining glass tiles, ceramic tiles and stone tiles. Usually, they are set on a sheet. This makes the installation easier.

What is the role of cement in tile adhesive?

Cement creates a bond with the sand when it is mixed with water. This bond extends into the tiles and the substrate, joining both of them. The proportion of sand, cement, and water is crucial for bonding. If the mixture is not perfect, it will create weak bonds.

What affects the bond strength of tile adhesive?

The bond strength depends on a few factors. They are the contact area between the tile and the surface beneath it and the type of adhesive that we are using. There are also some factors related to climates, like humidity and temperature. To increase the surface area, we need to apply the tiles on the surface with a twisted movement. After that, press the tiles with a rubber mallet, so the adhesive bed is formed uniformly.

What is a polymer-modified adhesive?

Porcelain tiles and vitrified tiles are dense. Conventional adhesives are not able to join these types of tiles. So polymers are added with the adhesive to increase the bond strength, flexibility, and resistance of the tiles. The polymer-based adhesive chemically reacts with the surface of the tiles and forms a strong bond. Thus the tiles stick with the surface.

Can I use butt joint on my tiles?

We do grout joints in tiles as this type of joining creates vents for the adhesive to cure. It also allows the tiles to move so that there is no compressive stress build-up.  But in case of the butt joint, there is very little space for the adhesive to cure and the tiles are unable to move, which builds up stress.

What is grouting?

Grout usually is a mixture of sand, cement, and water. It is applied between the spaces of tiles. It keeps the tiling structure sturdy during building movement and tile movement. There are different types of grout. Some of them are epoxy grout and unsanded grout.

What is Epoxy, Grout?

Epoxy Grout is made by using epoxy hardener and resin. This kind of grout can withstand high traffic and rough usage. We use epoxy grout in hotels, hospitals, public toilets, where high traffic is expected. This type of grout absorbs less water, so stains are minimal.

What are the procedures for tiling over new brick walls and screeded floors?

When you are going to do tiling over a new brick wall, or screeded floor first makes sure that the wall is cured for at least six weeks and the floor for four weeks.  Make sure there is no dust, dampness, fungus on the surface. After inspecting apply a coating of primer. Then apply adhesive over the primer. Now your surface is ready for tiling.

What measures can we take when we are installing large format tiles?

Tiles which are more significant than 600mm x 600mm in size are called a large format tiles. So when you are using this type of tiles, then you should keep in mind that the adhesive that you are using is a rapid setting adhesive. The adhesive should be applied on the surface as well as the back of the tile. There should be a minimum gap of 3mm in case of porcelain tiles, and if the tiles are ceramic, then the gap should be of 5mm.

Why my tile shower is leaking?

If the shower is working fine and there is no leakage, then you should check the grouts to see if there is any leakage. Visually inspect each section. What you are looking for is a missing grout or a small hole in the grout that is the source of leakage. Check it before and after the grout is dampened.

What should we do if shower water is leaking through the grout?

If the water is leaking from a crawl space from your shower, the problem is not with the grout joints. The problem could be the waterproofing membrane of the shower pan. To resolve the issue, you have first to remove and then reinstall the shower pan correctly. This will stop the leakage.

Which parts of the bathroom need to be waterproofed?

As the bathroom is the wettest area in your house, you should waterproof it properly. Waterproof the floor and the side walls. As the floor and the walls are exposed to water, not waterproofing it, isn’t a good idea. Check the other side of the wall of the bathroom. If you see any dampness there cover those areas with waterproofing agents too.
